ONE CITY, SIX VERY DIFFERENT STREETS

Bath doesn't drive the same in any two postcodes.

A hill start in Combe Down and a roundabout run through Odd Down are different jobs entirely. Here's what Dexter actually teaches in each part of the city he covers.

OLDFIELD PARK

Oldfield Park

Moorland Road on a Tuesday afternoon is delivery vans, buggies and cars parked nose to tail on both sides. There's rarely a straight run of more than fifty yards without someone pulling out, a bin lorry blocking a lane, or a gap you'll need to slow down and negotiate.

COMBE DOWN

Combe Down

Combe Down was a stone-mining village long before it was a place people commute from, and the streets still feel like they were laid out for carts, not traffic. Church Road climbs sharply from the bottom of the hill, narrows near the church, and offers almost nowhere to pass an oncoming car without one of you giving way first.

ODD DOWN

Odd Down

The Wellsway stretch through Odd Down moves faster than most of the city, and the roundabouts stack up close enough together that you need to be planning your exit before you've finished entering the one before it.

TWERTON

Twerton

The Lower Bristol Road doesn't look like the postcard version of Bath, and that's exactly why it's useful. Wide lanes, roundabouts feeding the retail park, and a steady flow of vans and lorries moving between the city and the A4.

LARKHALL

Larkhall

Larkhall sits on a slope, and most of its residential streets sit on that slope with it. Cars park nose-down on both sides, which leaves a channel down the middle that's often only wide enough for one direction of traffic at a time.

WESTON

Weston

Weston still has the feel of a village that got absorbed into the city rather than built as part of it. The High Street is narrow and busy with local traffic, but drive a few minutes further and you're on the roundabouts near Newbridge that lead straight into Bath's test routes.
