THE LESSONS THEMSELVES
No clutch. No stalling at the lights. Just the actual driving.
Automatic driving lessons take one whole skill off your first month of learning, so the rest of it, junctions, roundabouts, reading the road, gets your full attention from lesson one. Here's what that actually looks like with Dexter.

Pick the starting point that sounds like you.
A first lesson, a fresh start or a change of car. There is a page for each.
The pedals can wait. Start with the questions.
Never sat in the driving seat? You do not need to arrive knowing what everything does. Tell Dexter you are starting from scratch, and talk through what you need before you book.

The car behind. The hill ahead. The fear of getting something wrong with someone watching. Tell Dexter which bit worries you. A useful first conversation starts there.

If you have spent more time worrying about the bite point than watching the road, automatic may suit you better. Switching does not erase the useful things you already know.

Getting the basics square
Seat, mirrors, the pedals you actually have (there are two, not three). No test pressure in lesson one. Just getting comfortable enough to move.
Quiet roads first
Dexter starts on streets with room to think, building up your steering, observation and awareness before junctions and traffic get added in.
Bath's actual roads
Hills, roundabouts, narrow terraces, the roads you'll actually be driving on after you pass, introduced gradually as your confidence builds.
Why automatic makes sense here
Bath is not a flat city. Widcombe Hill, Bathwick Hill, the climb up to Combe Down, proper gradients with parked cars narrowing the road at the same time. A manual hill start on that kind of slope is one of the harder things a new driver has to get right, often with a car close behind.
An automatic removes clutch control from the task. Hill starts still need careful control and observation. You still need to learn everything else properly, but you're learning it without also managing a clutch on a hill.
Read the full manual vs automatic breakdownOne thing worth knowing first
Passing your test in an automatic gives you a licence for automatic cars. If you want to drive a manual later, you'll need a separate manual test. It's the one trade-off worth being clear on before you book a first lesson, not after.
For most learners choosing automatic, that's already the plan. Ask Dexter if you're still weighing it up.
Lessons built around where you actually are
Different parts of Bath test different skills. Once you've got the basics down, Dexter takes you to the streets that match what you need to practise.
Questions about lessons
See every question answeredWhy learn in an automatic instead of a manual?
An automatic takes clutch control and gear changes off your list entirely. You still need to learn everything else properly, junctions, hazard awareness, roundabouts, hill starts, but you're learning it without also juggling a clutch pedal on Bath's hills. Most learners who try both find automatic clicks faster.
Will an automatic licence let me drive a manual car?
No. An automatic pass gives you a licence restricted to automatic vehicles. To drive a manual, you'd need to pass a manual test separately, in a manual car, at a later date. For most learners choosing automatic, that's a decision they've already made peace with.
How many lessons will I need before I'm ready to test?
It depends entirely on where you're starting from and how often you can have lessons. Someone starting from nothing and having one lesson a week will need longer than someone switching from manual lessons with a run of hours already banked. Dexter will give you an honest estimate after the first couple of lessons, not before.
What do I need for my first lesson?
Your provisional driving licence, both the photocard and the paper counterpart details if you still have them, and glasses or contact lenses if you need them to read a number plate at distance. Everything else, Dexter provides.
