THE PERSON IN THE PASSENGER SEAT

Calm behind the wheel, and not just when it's his own car.

Dexter is new to instructing, not new to driving. He's a genuinely good, composed driver who has decided to spend his working week teaching other people to be one too.

Patience isn't an act he puts on for lessons

Some instructors are patient because the job requires it. With Dexter it seems to be closer to how he actually is. Calm, pleasant, and unbothered by the kind of moment that rattles most new drivers, a stall at a junction, a missed gap, a wobble on a hill start. None of it throws him off.

That matters more than people expect. A learner who feels judged tenses up, and a tense driver makes worse decisions, not better ones. Dexter's whole approach is built around keeping that tension out of the car in the first place.

If something hasn't clicked, he'd rather you said so and went over it again than pretended you've got it. That's not a script. It's just how he teaches.

The other side of it: track days

Outside of lessons, Dexter takes part in track days at circuits across the south of England. It's a different kind of driving to a Tuesday afternoon in Oldfield Park, but the underlying skill is the same one he teaches: reading a road, judging a gap, staying smooth under pressure rather than fighting the car.

It also means when he tells you your steering is tense or your braking is late, it's coming from someone who spends his own time off the clock thinking about exactly that.

What that means for your first lesson

No lecture, no rush

You won't be talked at for twenty minutes before you touch the pedals. Dexter gets you moving early and talks you through it as you go.

Straight, honest feedback

If you're not ready for your test yet, he'll tell you plainly, and tell you exactly what's still missing, not just that more lessons are needed.

Automatic, properly explained

As a new instructor teaching automatic specifically, Dexter isn't treating it as manual lessons with one thing removed. It's taught as its own thing.
