What actually makes Bath hard to learn to drive in

Georgian streets weren't built for cars. Neither were most of the junctions learners get tested on.

Bath looks calm from the pavement. From the driver's seat, it's a different city entirely: narrow streets built two hundred years before cars existed, hills steep enough to need proper technique, and a city centre that fills with tourists stepping off the kerb without checking either way.

The streets were never meant for two-way traffic

The Circus and Royal Crescent are stunning to look at and genuinely tight to drive. Parked cars on both sides, tour groups spilling into the road, and barely enough width for two cars to pass without one of you slowing right down. Georgian planners were not thinking about wing mirrors.

The hills change the job

Widcombe Hill, Bathwick Hill, the climb into Combe Down, Lansdown Road. These aren't gentle inclines, they're proper gradients, often with parked cars narrowing the usable road at the same time. Hill starts here need to be second nature, not something you're still thinking through step by step.

The roundabouts come in sequences

Out towards Odd Down and along Wellsway, roundabouts arrive close together, and you need to be planning your exit from one before you've finished the last. It's a different skill to the single, isolated roundabout most learners practise first, and it takes deliberate repetition to get comfortable with.

How lessons actually deal with all of it

Rather than trying to cover every kind of road in every lesson, Dexter builds sessions around the specific challenge that's holding you back. Struggling with hill starts, expect time in Combe Down or Larkhall. Roundabout sequencing feeling rushed, that's an Odd Down session. As your test date nears, lessons shift towards the actual roads your test is likely to use.
